This creation is one of the 23 finalists for the second edition of the Fabrique 1840 Award, which aims to drive the next generation of Canadian artisans forward and support diversity.
Toronto-based fashion designer and artisan Warren Steven Scott explores his Salish heritage through creative techniques ranging from sewing to laser cutting and pattern design. Over the past few years, the creator has explored both haute couture and acrylic jewellery, particularly through the stimulating setting of Toronto's Indigenous Fashion Arts Festival. He has also begun deepening his creative work through research and reflection, collecting recovered materials and studying their properties to use them in new artistic forms. From his Experimental Collage series, this abstract two-dimensional work unveils a part of his methodology and vision. He created the work using scrap acrylic sheets from his jewellery-making process that would otherwise be waste as a study of shapes, colour, and contrast in the positive-negative space that leads to an illustration of the tension between tradition and innovation.
