Simons to Open Second Edmonton Store August 2017
Londonderry store combines bold new initiatives in environmental sustainability with local art and expanded footwear fashion
Simons, the 177-year-old, family-owned fashion retailer from Quebec City, will open its second Edmonton store in late August 2017. The location at Londonderry, anchoring the north end of the mall at 66 Street and 144 Avenue, marks Simons’ 15th store, its third in Alberta. With a total of 90,000 square feet, the two-level store will include Simons’ first dedicated shoe department, art installations from local Alberta artists and one of the country’s largest solar electric systems at a retail location.
“Our store concepts are constantly evolving to reflect our commitment to art, fashion and now, more than ever, the environment,” said President Peter Simons. “While the essence of the Simons experience at Londonderry will be the same as it is at our popular West Edmonton Mall store, the expanded shoe department and the local art add new elements for shoppers who visit the new location.”
Over 50 per cent of the store’s electricity usage will come from on-site renewable energy sources. In the north parking lot about 80 car parking spots will have canopies covered in 720 bifacial solar modules, the latest in solar technology, which have glass on both surfaces to capture both direct and reflected sunlight. Combined with 950 high efficiency solar modules on Simons’ roof, the entire solar-electric system will generate over 550,000 kWh/year (equivalent to 80 homes) and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 350 tonnes/year.
As well, an interior lighting program that includes LED lamps and fixtures throughout the store will reduce electricity devoted to lighting by more than 40 per cent (compared to traditional halogen light fixtures).
Electric car charging stations will be installed in the parking lot adjacent to the store, including two level 2 chargers and one level 3 fast-charger, which will charge most electric vehicles to 80 per cent in 30 minutes.
Impressed by Simons’ sustainability initiatives, Alberta artist and activist Peter von Tiesenhausen agreed to his first ever corporate commission for the Londonderry store. Drawn by Desire is a 50-foot-long art installation that appears to be an abstract grouping of human figures cut out of aluminum plates suspended from the 2nd floor ceiling. When viewed head on from Simons’ first level mall entrance, however, the 500 carefully positioned plates come together to form a large, single human silhouette, that mirrors the individual aluminum figures. Drawn by Desire speaks to perspective and discovery.
Continuing the theme of local art is Hayley Wright, a former Simons employee from the West Edmonton Mall location. Wright’s illustration and skateboard designs will appear in Twik, the area for young women, with a large-scale watercolour portrait in the fitting room entrance and a custom set of skate boards mounted in the denim area featuring fun, inspiring messages, colours and patterns.
EXPANDED SHOE ASSORTMENT
Rounding out Simons’ new initiatives for the Londonderry store are expanded shoe assortments for both men and women. This represents an evolution for Simons from carrying a few select shoe brands to fully serviced shoe zones within the accessory departments on both the men’s and women’s floors. Additional back-of-house storage will allow Simons to carry larger quantities of shoe sizes.
A longtime, trusted partner of Simons, Lemay Michaud of Quebec, led both the architecture and design of Londonderry. To help shoppers navigate the two-level store, Lemay Michaud used contrasts in colours and materials to define each department while maintaining a cohesive design that weaves all the sections together.
