Classic Blue: The Pantone Color of the Year 2020

23 Dec 2019

It’s become a tradition. Each December for the past 20 years, the Pantone Color Institute has revealed the color that will be the headlining hue for the next 12 months. Travel, art, global phenomena, cinema, entertainment, and design are carefully analyzed by this institution to uncover new chromatic trends and select the color that will prevail over the coming year.

While 2019 was dedicated to vibrant Living Coral, 2020 will be a bit darker, but very elegant and visually inspiring at the same time. So, are you ready to meet this year’s top color? Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Classic Blue!

A Blue Hue With Quite an Effect

Pantone revealed its first color of the year at the start of the new millennium. Cerulean blue was the shade that set the tone for the year 2000. It was a soft color that contrasted with the darkness of the end of the decade and brought a feeling of hope and renewal.

With just a few days left before saying goodbye to the 2010s, we’re observing a similar phenomenon. Often associated with the sea and the sky, blue is seen as a positive hue and could be the most popular color in the world. Known for being soothing, it evokes a sense of calm, confidence, and serenity—qualities that are sought after in times that are rather unstable on a global scale.

With this in mind, Pantone has introduced its new standout shade, Classic Blue. It might not be the most daring color choice there is, but it’s one that’s inspiring and reassuring as we step into the next decade.

“A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.”

Fashion’s Feeling Blue

We had hints that blue would rise to the top again with all the fashion buzz about International Klein Blue last season. While 2020’s Pantone color was only unveiled a short while ago, celebs and designers have already started adopting Classic Blue. In the Spring 2020 runway shows that took place earlier this fall, many pieces stood out featuring this trendy tone at MarniAtlein, KenzoY/Project et Eckhaus Latta

The red carpet has also been experiencing a blue moment with many celebrities recently sporting outfits in this stunning shade for galas and social events. Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones), Cole Sprouse (aka Jughead from the Netflix TV series Riverdale), celebrity Kim Kardashian, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, have all worn Classic Blue in a stylish and elegant way.

The new Pantone color has also been making waves in the worlds of design and interior décor. Accent furniture that comes in this rich shade of blue will add a feeling of luxury and sophistication to any room. On walls, Classic Blue can either act as an accent or completely cover every inch of space for a striking visual effect that will create calm and serenity. In short, it’s the #1 color to bring into your home and beautifully transform your interior in an instant.
