Retro Evolution: A Trend Inspired by the '70s

13 Sep 2019

Rich, sumptuous materials and warm shades are what’s hot this season. When worn to their full potential, these textures and tones result in reinvented luxe. Here, we’re introducing different ways to style fall’s fashion hits that will work as well for elegant ensembles as for urban outfits.

Modernized Retro

Fashion’s having a flashback to the ’70s when social changes led to a revolution in gendered dress codes. As a result, the styles you’ll see this season are androgynous. Blazers, pants, sweatshirts, and coats showcase unisex cuts and irresistible, nostalgia-inducing patterns.

A fan of retro aesthetics? To test the trend out for yourself, punctuate your looks with geometric weaves, checks, argyle, and wavy stripes. Fall for this reinvented vintage vibe and redefine the way you wear your favorite solid-color styles.

Elaborate Textures

Spotted absolutely everywhere on the runway, corduroy and sherpa are this season’s standout fabrics! Get amped up about all the jackets, shirts, dresses, skirts, pants, and accessories that’ll be making their way to you in these soft and comfortable materials.

For clothing that has character, try taking these favorite fall fabrics from head to toe. In menswear, corduroy blazers paired with pants made of the same material are classy and make you look well put together. When it comes to women, a coordinating skirt and blazer combo is a bold style move that’ll give you a major boost!

Mixing textures together results in a richness that’s just unreal. For instance, style a structured corduroy overshirt with a soft wool sweater to create a balanced and harmonious silhouette. Versatile and classic leather is another material that’ll make for an amazing pairing piece. A leather skirt, belt, and boots work wonderfully with a sherpa sweater or coat and will add instant chic to your outfit.

Earth Tones

Flattering and timeless, brown, rust, ochre, and sand-inspired hues will warm up your heart (and your wardrobe!)
To instantly look elegant, try them in a tonal look (with one color worked in different shades). For example, pair a burgundy skirt and caramel boots with a dark brown sweater and blazer. This combination can also be reworked in ivories, ochres, and beiges for a subtle and stylish result.

If you want to create a dynamic outfit, combine earthy colors with ones that are brighter and deeper. A rust-colored pant pairs perfectly with a red and violet cardigan (amongst other colors). Electric blue and fuchsia (very on trend this season) goes great with different chestnut and orange tones. Additionally, these types of pairings will make these pigments stand out in unique and unexpected ways.

Lovely Layers

The more, the merrier! This season, experiment with layering all the clothing you love. Velvets and colorful stripes, leather and sherpa, hoodies and blazers… any and all combinations are allowed.

For a look that’s both cozy and trendy, putting lots of different pieces together is key. Don’t hesitate to slip a light turtleneck on under a sweater and add a coat and a scarf. Roll up the sleeves of your shirt to show off the pretty pattern on the T-shirt underneath and accentuate your silhouette with a belt. Whether you’re wearing tone-on-tone pieces or playing with contrasting colors, your looks will never have had so much personality!
